There are other limits to the effectiveness of these masks: They don't always provide eye protection, and any mask is only as good as the seal around the wearer's face - a leak or a weak seal would render them useless. Most activated charcoal masks have disposable filters that are easily replaced. As long as there's space on the charcoal filter's fibers for incoming toxins, the wearer is safe.īut after a period of time - depending on the density of toxic chemicals in the air, the wearer's rate of breathing and other factors - an activated charcoal filter will stop working and will need to be replaced. Those threats require a mask with activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal.Ĭharcoal bonds with the active ingredients in nerve gas and other chemical threats, effectively filtering those toxic compounds out of the air inhaled by the mask's wearer. Paper-filter masks, however, are useless against most chemicals, whether paint fumes, sarin gas or airborne organophosphates. (The average human hair is 70 micrometers in diameter.) These masks are rated by the amount of particles they can filter: A mask rated 95 will stop 95 percent of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in size and larger, while a mask rated 100 will filter out 99.97 percent of particles 0.3 microns and larger, making it comparable to a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. The bodycam footage of the incident is available below, courtesy of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.Inexpensive face masks, like the disposable paper-filter masks available in hardware stores, are effective only against airborne particles. “If not for the de-escalation and tactical training we provide our deputies, this idiot would be dead,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. His bond was set at $25,000, and as of Friday afternoon he remains behind bars. Upon being booked at the Flagler County Jail, Keel was charged with felony Firearm Use Under the Influence, Aggravated Assault on an Officer, Unlawful Concealed Carry, and misdemeanor Driving Under the Influence. Though West’s car was an unmarked patrol vehicle, he himself was said to be wearing clearly marked ‘SHERIFF’ imagery on his person.īackup soon arrived to assist with the apprehension of West. Later investigation determined that the gun, a Glock 43, was loaded and unhindered. “You’re lucky I didn’t shoot you.” After the fact Keel said he was trying to hand the gun over, but the arrest report states he was holding it in such a way that the trigger was accessible and the barrel was aimed toward West. “That’s probably the dumbest thing you could’ve done,” he said. West did not state in the arrest report that Keel had given him prior notice that he was about to reach for the gun.Īs Keel placed his hands on the hood as asked to, West began to scold him for his actions. Keel’s speech was observed by deputies to be somewhat slurred, and he was later charged with a DUI. The audio in the bodycam footage (attached below) isn’t completely clear, but Keel might’ve said something to the effect of “I want to let you hold it” to West, which West responded to with, “Okay yeah, I appreciate it”.
